Parts of the Auto-Dimming Rear-View Mirrors

The auto-dimming rear-view mirrors that are available for many vehicles have a lot of advantages to the regular rear-view mirrors. If you are wondering how they are able to work so effectively, there are actually quite a few different parts to the vehicle which will make dim the bright lights to a safe level.

The Dimming rear-view mirrors have two layers of glass, electrochromic gel, two sensors which detect the light. This could come in the form of cameras or photodetectors that are based in photo-diode. Then there is a microprocessor that gets the message. The sensors and microprocessors work together in order dim image so that the driver can look into it without danger.

The electrochromic gel darkens when the charge is sent to it through oxidation. The gel is placed within the two layers of glass. In a working rear-view mirror, this will restrict the light that reflects back.
